10 HOME REMEDY TIPS ON UNBLOCKING A DRAIN
1. The Pressure, Gravity, Baking Soda & Vinegar
Good for clogged bath drains. Mix as per instructed in 4 below and pour into the drain. Fill the (cleaned) tub and enjoy a long bath. When you pull the plug, the pressure of the water should loosen the now compromised blockage.
2. The Cleaning of the Trap (if it is removable)
Place an empty bucket under the trap. Remove the trap. Turn the trap upside down and empty the contents into the bucket. You might want to flush the trap afterwards.
3. The Dish Detergent
Great for blocked toilets. Pour 1/4 cup of dish detergent in the bowl, then follow with a bucket of hot water.
4. The Baking Soda and Vinegar
Mix 1/3rd of a cup of baking soda with 1/3rd of a cup of vinegar. It fizzes immediately, quickly pour it down the blocked drain. Let it settle as long as possible - best is overnight. Then flush with hot water.
5. The Salt and Baking Soda
Mix 1/2 cup of table salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour down the blocked drain. Leave for 15min and follow with a kettle of boiling water. The salt and baking soda create a chemical reaction that could dissolve the blockage.
6. The Drain Snake
Most hardware stores have it. It is a long flexible metal rope with a spiral at the end of it. Follow the instructions and see what you can remove.
7. The Boiling Water
Apply boiling water from a kettle, 1/3 of the volume in the kettle every 30 secs or so. Repeat a few times if necessary.
8. The Wire Hanger
Simple, straighten a wire hanger, bend a small hook at one end. Place it down the drain and fish the blockage out with the hook. Don't drop the wire in the drain!
9. The Wet & Dry Vacuum
Don't forget to use a cloth to make as tight a seal where the vacuum head meets the drain.
10. The Caustic Soda
Only use with rubber gloves and eye protection - it can cause chemical burns. Pour 3lt of cold water into a bucket, then add 3 cups of caustic soda. Stir it well with a wooden spoon, until it begins to fizz and heat up. Pour entire contents into the clogged drain and leave for 30 minutes. then flush the drain with boiling water. Repeat if necessary.
REASONS FOR DRAINS GURGLING
Drains normally gurgle as a result of a blocked or a slow draining drain, or a blocked vent pipe.
The gurgling is caused by air bubbles that cannot be expelled via the drain pipes or vent and get expelled at the nearest ‘vent’ – which could be a basin, toilet or shower drain.
What to check for:
1) Blocked drains - caused by: build-up of waste material, collapsed pipe, root ingress, mains blockage, foreign objects.
2) Slow draining drains - caused by: all that contributes to a blocked drain and or a subsided drain (where the drain dips and waste water settles in the dip)
3) Blocked vent pipe – caused by: leaves, bird or rodent nest or accumulated dirt - not very common
4) The plumber reduced the line to 40mm and /or did not put enough fall on the pipe.
5) Faulty Vent Valve - see solution below
FAULTY VENT VALVE
To check this, take the outside vent valve off and see if the problem goes away. If so, replace the vent valve.
VENTING OF DRAINS
Drains need to be vented, to allow a column of water to flow down a pipe, preventing the air ahead of the column of water from being compressed, thereby preventing or restricting the flow of water.
As the column of water flows, air must be able to freely flow behind this column, creating positive pressure from behind the column of water assisting its downward flow.
Negative air pressure can result in a siphon effect, draining traps, allowing noxious sewer gasses to enter the room.
Negative air pressure could also cause waste water to be pushed back into the fixture. This could result in the splashing or flowing of waste water out and into the fixture that should drain.
